My towbar has been damaged during an accident. Can it be repaired? Can I continue to use it?
When vehicles with a towbar are damaged at the rear, it is highly likely that the towbar has absorbed much of the force of the impact and that its structural integrity will have been compromised. Often the damage will be visible; other times the damage to the towbar will be more subtle.
Aside from an obviously bent towbar, signs of damage include irregular notches and distortions at mounting points, surface damage, irregular angles and excess free play in the removable tongue system.
All insurance companies scrap accident damaged towbars and replace them with brand new towbars. Insurance companies and Megatyre never “repair” damaged towbars. If your towbar has been involved in an accident, it should not be used again until it has been inspected by an authorised person. Any towbar with visible damage should be removed and destroyed.
