Fifteen years ago Megatyre changed tyre brands and started selling Hankook Tyres from Korea. Going from a reasonably known brand to a fairly obscure one was a bold step but Hankook’s huge product range, philosophy and the progressive stance of their New Zealand distributor were appealing. Back then Hankook was an emerging label from a country that many people did not know much about. Korean electronics were rare and their cars were generally regarded as being inferior to Japanese vehicles. Hankook Tyres have always been a great seller for Megatyre but we often had customers who had never heard of Hankook or were suspicious of products from Korea. I had quite a bit of explaining to do! But once drivers experienced Hankook quality, they nearly always came back for more.
The situation in 2014 is entirely different, Korea is a world leader in consumer electronics and motor vehicle manufacture. Cars from Hyundai, Kia and SsangYong are hugely popular and Hyundai is widely tipped to soon become the biggest selling vehicle in New Zealand and Australia. Consumers and vehicle owners realise that Korean companies are synonymous with quality and this especially applies to Hankook Tyres. Megatyre customers are mostly well aware of Hankook tyres and the quality of products from Korean companies. Amazingly Hankook have been able to maintain their highly competitive pricing for their superior quality tyres.
Hankook has become a leader in the original equipment tyre market supplying tyres for 5 BMW models and to Mercedes Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Ford, General Motors, Mini, Toyota, Nissan, Chrysler, Hyundai and Kia. Hankook’s vast research and technological resources have enabled them to engineer tyres offering major advances in environmental responsibility, fuel economy, weight reduction, tyre mileage, noise reduction, ride comfort and handling. These are the reasons why vehicle manufacturers are increasing turning to Hankook for OE tyres. It should be remembered that many tyre manufacturers do not have Hankook’s resources and therefore are unable to participate in the new technologically driven vehicle tyre development programs.
Hankook are celebrating their 70th anniversary this year and have become a leading mainstream premium tyre company. At Megatyre we only sell Hankook and related tyres; we see no sense in diluting the strength of our tyre story by dealing in other brands.
