We often get requests from customers for prices and availability of removable tongue towbars for their vehicles. The main reasons for wanting one seem to be that the vehicle is a very tight fit in the garage, the customer is concerned that a fixed tongue towbar detracts from the appearance of their vehicle, they do not want the tongue getting in the way when they are off road or they are simply concerned about walking into the tongue and getting hurt.
At Megatyre towbars, Browns Bay, North Shore, Auckland, we can fit a removable tongue to many vehicles: most larger 4wds can have the conventional removable tongue which slides into a receiver and is secured by a special bolt. The drawback is the receiver usually has to hang below the body line so there is access for inserting and removing the retaining bolt, ok on higher vehicles but too low to the ground on other vehicles. On vehicles with lower ground clearance and bumpers, we can usually supply a removable tongue which is secured by two bolts; it is a good solution for people who only want to use their towbar occasionally but not really practical for folks want to remove the tongue on a regular basis. n.b. the bolts on the tongue should be torqued up to the applicable recommended setting with a calibrated torque wrench.
