A customer came to see us on Saturday after his warrant of fitness. The warrant of fitness inspector told him he had to remove the removable tongue on the towbar at the front of his vehicle, but it was totally seized.
Our customer had the towbar fitted to his Toyota Surf about 6 years ago but had never removed the tongue; he had probably passed about 11 wof’s since then but this time the inspector said he had to remove the tongue as it was extending beyond the front bumper. Fair enough, that is the wof rule. Problem was that it had never been greased or removed, it had been immersed in sea water and was now rusted solid!
The only thing we could do, at Megatyre Towbars, Browns Bay, North Shore, Auckland, to solve the problem was to lay down under the vehicle and bash the tongue out of the receiver with a heavy hammer. It was not easy but it eventually came out. Actually, the paint had done a good job of protecting the towbar but there was surface rust on the tongue shaft and the inside of the receiver. We wire brushed the surface rust off and gave the tongue shaft a thick coat of “copper coat grease”.
Now our customer can get his wof and if he removes the tongue occasionally and puts more copper coat on the shaft every few years, he should have no more problems.
Our customer was delighted when we refused to accept payment for this service and we were delighted when he brought us a big box of beer latter that day!
