Recently we have had quite a few inquiries from people asking if they can install their existing towbar on a new vehicle they are buying and even if they can fit a towbar from a Nissan Pulsar to a Subaru Forester.
This is possible only if you are buying the exact same model. Towbars are precision & accurately made to fit only a certain model as designated by the manufacturers chassis number. A very popular BMW model is the 3 series E46 which will generally fit the sedan, coupe and station wagon variants but often will not fit the various performance versions with body kits.
With other vehicles, like the Toyota Corolla, there may be different towbars required for sedans, coupes and station wagons and even more variations dependant on year of manufacture and chassis number. It is also common practice that manufacturers will do a “facelift” during the life-cycle of a model, which usually entails different bumpers & lights requiring a different towbar to fit in with the new bumper dimensions.
So the important thing to remember is that tow bar fitting is driven by vehicle chassis numbers, if the chassis number of your new vehicle aligns with the donor vehicle, there is a reasonable chance you can transfer the towbar, but no guarantee!
