New Zealand trailers have either 1 7/8ths or 50 mm trailer couplings and many of our towbar customers are faced with the need to change between when they use different trailers. Obviously it would all be easier if there was a standardised coupling size; but there seems to be no prospect of that, so we need to deal with the situation as it is. It is a legal requirement that the towing vehicle have the correct towball for the trailer being towed . Using the wrong size is very dangerous and may invalidate your insurance.
Often towbar users will have both towballs and regularly change them according to the trailer they are towing. This is not as simple as it sounds as the towballs can be extremely dificult to remove by hand. A huge amount of force is often needed to remove them and it is quite easy to injure yourself while doing this. And sometimes they are seized making it impossible to remove the towball manually and require use of a high powered impact wrench.
A better option is to fit one of our high quality USA made “Convert a Balls” which can be changed between 1 7/8ths and 50 mm heads in seconds without the need for any tools. This well designed and beautifully made product should not be confused with some of the poor quality Chinese products on the market.
“Convert a Ball” changeable towballs are available in Chrome or Stainless Steel with either 7/8 ths or 1 inch shanks.
Available from our Browns Bay, North Shore, Auckland shop or by mail order.
