Most of us encounter wheel balancing when we fit new tyres and forget all about it till the next set of new tyres are fitted. But wheel balancing does not last for the life of your tyres as a tyres weight distribution changes due to normal wear and tear, panic braking and abuse. Symptoms of poor tyre balance include a shaking steering wheel, vibration throughout the vehicle and excessive tyre wear.
Unlike vehicles of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, modern vehicles are highly sensitive to wheel balancing and even minor imbalances as low as 10 grams, which acts on your car like a blow from a hammer with a force of 2.5 kgs, place major stress on your vehicles suspension and steering systems. Poor wheel balancing affects tyre life and the resultant vibrations cause stress in lower ball joints, axles, shock absorbers and other essential vehicle parts. This stress causes vehicle parts to wear quicker with a subsequent need to replace them sooner than if the wheels had been correctly balanced.
Driving a vehicle with poorly balanced tyres with the resultant shaking steering wheel and/or vibration though the cabin is stressful and makes driving an ordeal. Overseas tests indicate braking distances are significantly increased by poorly balanced wheels. (Hofman Power Weight Test 30 Jun 2010)
High quality wheel balancing is entirely dependant on two factors: it is essential that the technician performing the balance is conscientious and pays attention to detail and that the wheel balancer doing the job is sufficiently advanced to accurately balance your wheels to the standard demanded by modern vehicles; and it is crucial that an auto lock balancer is used to ensure accurate placement of the wheel on the balancer.
Super high quality tyres like Hankook and Laufenn tend to require application of minimal weights to achieve perfect balancing whereas lesser products can require application of much higher weights. It is often impossible to perfectly balance poor quality tyres as the large weights required can still be felt through the cabin.
